Covenant capaCITY Conference

18th -19th September, Malmö, Sweden

Covenant capaCITY began in June 2011 and is a 3 year project co-funded by the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme. The focus of the project, which will end in May 2014, is to provide support for local governments in Europe throughout the Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) development. The project is a result of the urgent need to develop more sustainable energy communities (SEC) across Europe.  Through education, training and support, Covenant capaCITY aims to motivate and guide cities and towns in planning and implementing SEAPs.

The Covenant capaCITY Conference will be hosted by Milan Obradovic, Chairman of the Environment Committee, City of Malmö, and will be attended by local governments, their associations and energy agencies. Over the two day conference there will be a range of speakers and panel discussions. Day 1 attempts to answer the question of why climate protection and sustainable energy is necessary, what cities and towns’ needs are when it comes to SEAPs and how do you bring sustainability to the public. Day 2 involves a Covenant capaCITY study tour where delegates will visit cities where SEAPs have been successfully implementationed including Sege Park, Western Harbour and the European Green Capital for 2014 – Copenhagen.

The European Green Capital Award is judged by a jury on 12 indicators. One of those indicators is energy performance and a strong SEAP is essential to achieve this. By working with organisations such as capaCITY, local governments can make both environmentally and economically sound plans that will transform the way the city is powered.
