ACR+ Launches the Extended Producers Responsibly (EPR) Club

4th June 2012, Brussels

On the 4th of June the ACR (Association of Cities and Regions for Recycling and sustainable Resource Management) + EPR club will be launched in Brussels. The Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) Club will provide a forum for key stakeholders and experts to exchange information and debate relevant topics. EPR schemes are developed all around Europe to promote recycling of packaging, electronic waste, cars, batteries and other types of waste.

The launch will take place in the European Economic and Social Committee, Brussels and will be a half day event. Anna-Maria Darmanin, Vice-President of the European Economic Social Committee will be the welcome speaker and the EPR Club itself will be presented by Olivier De Clercq, Secretary General of the ACR+. This will be followed by three seminar debates on the changes with EPR schemes in Europe, the challenges which need to be faced and what is expected from the new EPR Club.

The aim of the EPR club is to create a benchmark on recycling performances, European harmonization, fair competition, public control or best practices. The Club will be attended by stakeholders such as public authorities, waste management companies, material federations, NGOs and EU policy developments and technical implementation of EPR schemes throughout Europe will be up for discussion.

Waste production and management is one of the criteria evaluated by the European Green Capital Award panel. It is estimated that Europe produces over 250 million tonnes of municipal waste and more than 850 million of industrial waste annually. The expected annual growth rate of 3% means that Europe will soon not have the capabilities to deal with waste to the acceptable environmental standards and so this is an important area for all green cities to focus on.
