8th ESDN Workshop

22-23 November 2012, Brussels
This year will mark the 8th ESDN Workshop. It will take place in Brussels from the 22nd to the 23rd of November. The theme of this year’s workshop is “Financial Markets, Institutions and Policies in the Context of Sustainable Development Policy – Dimensions, Issues and Actors of an Emerging Sustainable Development Strategy Arena”. The aim of the workshop is to set up a dialogue between the ESDN, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and the SD Observatory of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) to reflect upon the relationship between sustainable development and the financial markets.

The concept of “green economy” is a much debated topic without a concrete definition. It is generally agreed that this phrase describes the attempt to derive economic gain from the challenges of climate change and the scarcity of natural resources, primarily through energy- and resource-saving technology. However, controversy lies in its relevance to developing countries and whether it hinders their economic growth.

The ESDN believes that the green economy should serve as a vehicle for sustainable development, yet it is unclear what its means should be. While the joint benefit of economic gain and sustainability can be achieved from the green economy in the medium-term, the implementation of framework sustainable development policies is important to ensure that the weaknesses and controversies of the concept are managed and irradiated where possible.

Like the European Green Capital Award, the ESDN promotes the exchange of knowledge and experience in order to create a community working towards sustainability.
