European Commission Handover Title to Hamburg, 2011 European Green Capital

The European Commission handed over the title of Green Capital from Stockholm to Hamburg at an event in Brussels on the 15th December 2010.
A seminar took place, in addition to the hand over, called “What it takes to become a European Green Capital – and the benefits it brings”, and looked at the experiences of the four winning cities: Stockholm (2010) , Hamburg (2011) , Vitoria-Gasteiz (2012) and Nantes (2013) , as well as hearing the view point of an applicant city – Antwerp.
The City of Stockholm also gave an evaluation of its year as the first Green Capital and what the title has meant for citizens, businesses and visitors.
The 2011 European Green Capital- Hamburg showcased how a highly industrialised port city can succeed in combining ecological sustainability with economic growth. Hamburg also presented its communication actions including the Train of Ideas. The Train of ideas is in the process of visiting 18 European cities including Brussels (7th September 2011). Speakers from Vitoria-Gasteiz, Nantes and Antwerp, also spoke about what’s involved in applying for the award.
