Karl Falkenberg in Ljubljana
On Saturday, 14 May 2016, as part of a yearly cycling tour connecting Europe’s Green Capitals, Karl Falkenberg, senior adviser for sustainable development at the European Commission, arrived in Ljubljana. He was welcomed, along with his squad of EU Green Bikers, in front of the city hall by Mayor Zoran Janković and Deputy Mayor Tjaša Ficko.
Karl Falkenberg was the European Commission’s previous Director-General for Environment and president of the jury that, in 2014, awarded Ljubljana its European Green Capital.
This year the cycling tour carries special meaning. Falkenberg used the opportunity to donate funds he raised during his cycle tour for the preservation of Ljubljana’s Path of Remembrance and Comradeship, a 34 kilometer, tree-lined walkway that circles the city. In addition to its recreational purposes, the path serves as a memorial to the suffering of Ljubljana’s citizens during the second World War.
