Green Cities
The European Commission has long recognised the important role that local authorities play in improving the environment, and their high level of commitment to genuine progress. The European Green Capital Award was conceived as an initiative to promote and reward these efforts, to spur cities to commit to further action, and to showcase and encourage exchange of best practice among European cities.
First award winners
At an
award ceremony in Brussels on
23 February 2009, it was announced that the first European
Green Capitals will be:
All finalists are front runners!
The first award winners were found in a
very close race among eight finalists who have all submitted
highly qualified applications. They are all environmental
front runners, and their efforts and initiatives may serve as an inspiration for other cities that are planning
similar efforts for a greener urban environment.
