Water is an essential resource for life. Climate change and over consumption has reduced our supply of water and now a major challenge is ensuring that water is used efficiently and conservatively by everyone. Water is a key element in agriculture to help grow crops for food and biomass for fuel to satisfy the world’s growing population. The focus of this event “More Crop Per Drop – Raising Water Use Efficiency”, is on more efficient use of water in agriculture. The aim of this event is to deliver ways to use less water without reducing crop size or quality.
Sustainable use of water in agriculture is essential to help provide food in water stressed areas. Improving water productivity has three main components: agronomic and plant science; water storage and transmission; and, governance relating to water access and competing uses. This event will mainly explore agronomic and plant science.
Delegates will attend lectures by industrial and academic experts which will examine the extent of the problem, the impact of climate change, the issues for policy formation; and, the priorities for allocation of time and resources. The event will be the first of what is intended to be a series of events exploring solutions for raising water use efficiency and delivering “more crop per drop”.
Urban development and population growth has put an added stress on agriculture. The European Green Capital Award encourages cities to live sustainably. That is, not to over extend natural resources such as food and water. Advances made in both urban areas and agricultural areas can mutually benefit participants and allow them to jointly work towards mitigating climate change.
One of the criteria examined by the European Green Capital judging panel is water consumption. Efficient, effective water management is fundamental to a Green city. The city that is chosen as the European Green Capital will be a city that demonstrates a well-established record of achieving high environmental standards and is committed to achieving ongoing and ambitious goals for future environmental improvement and sustainable development.
Vitoria-Gasteiz, the 2012 European Green Capital has an ambitious objective of reducing domestic water consumption to below 100 liters per capita per day. Today the water consumption in Vitoria-Gasteiz has decreased steadily from 1999 to 2009. Water-related investments have been made within the context of the Agenda 21 environmental action plan for improved water supply, to reduce losses, work towards sustainable consumption and improve water quality. A citizen’s information office on water consumption and efficiency has also been set up.
