26th -27th November, Lisbon, Spain
From the 26th to the 27th of November in Lisbon, the European Commission will be holding the 13th European Forum on Eco-Innovation. Adopted in December 2011, the EU Eco-Innovation Action Plan aims to boost innovations that aim to or result in reducing pressures on the environment and to bridge the gap between research and the market.
The key aim of the forum is to highlight the main challenges and opportunities in research, development and innovation when entering the global market and to support and encourage the international collaboration with regard to eco-innovation. This year there will be a special focus on water, looking at its management and use.
As water is our main source of life it is one of our most critical resources and now more than ever along with other natural resources around the world, it is under threat. Changes in the environment is leading to water resources and ecosystems services facing significant pressure, intensifying the challenges with which we are faced.
As the main focus of the forum is on water it hopes to gain an understanding of local, regional and global water challenges and needs and how to realise well-adapted solutions, promote local and global partnerships, whilst demonstrating the development of technologies, methodologies and strategies in support of better water management for new markets and mobilisation of finance, investment and public-private partnerships as crucial tools to reach new markets for innovative water management.
One of the criteria examined by the European Green Capital judging panel is water consumption. Efficient, effective water management is fundamental to a Green city. The city that is chosen as the European Green Capital will be a city that demonstrates a well-established record of achieving high environmental standards and is committed to achieving ongoing and ambitious goals for future environmental improvement and sustainable development.
