5th December 2012, Brussels
The Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the European Commission have come together to organise a conference titled Driving better implementation in our cities and regions – a key element of the 7th Environmental Action Programme. The conference will take place on the 5th of December at the Committee of Regions in Brussels. The conference will coincide with work on the 7th Environmental Action Programme (EAP).
The conference will examine how better implementation of EU environment law can improve the effects of the 7th EAP. The aim of EAPs is to set out future environmental goals. The 6th EAP is in its last year after being established 10 years ago in 2002. It set out key environmental objectives to be achieved in four priority areas: climate change, nature and biodiversity, environment and health, and natural resources and waste. This conference will present views from the EU institutions on the implementation topics of a 7th EAP, including the Opinion to be adopted by the Committee of the Regions (CoR) end of November on this issue.
There will be a roundtable discussion with Commissioner Janez Potočnik; Jo Leinen, Member of the European Parliament and rapporteur on the EAP; Erminia Mazzoni, Chair of the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee; CoR Vice-President Mercedes Bresso; and Paul Lemass, from the incoming Irish EU Presidency.
The conference will also examine how local authorities are best positioned to achieve better results on the ground. The European Green Capital Award was established to recognise the work of local authorities in the fields of sustainability and environmental protection. The Award highlights the value of implementing policies at a local level in order to achieve the best result for that area. This will lead to aggregated success across regions.
