2017 Applicant Workshop

The Applicant Workshop for the 2017 competition cycle was held on Friday 5 September 2014 in Brussels.

The day provided potential applicants with an overview of the competition process, the do’s and dont’s of applying, advice from previous applicants, finalists and winners and opportunities to network with other environmental frontrunners from across Europe.

1. Introduction to the Secretariat – We’re here to help
An overview of the Secretariat, the role of the Secretariat in the process and how the Secretariat can help applicant cities. Info on new sections of the application form e.g. good practices section. To view this presentation please click here.

2. The Benefits of being a Green Capital
DG Environment presented on how winning the European Green Capital Award has impacted on winning cities. This included an overview of previous winning cities experiences, video from Vitoria-Gasteiz, Nantes, Bristol, About EGCA and details on the new EGCA Community initiative from Copenhagen. 3. Overview of the 2016 Application form & Guidance Note
The Secretariat gave an overview of application form and guidance note content. This session highlighted key changes from previous cycles i.e. good practices section. To view this presentation please click here.

4. Preparing an application – a ‘smaller’ cities viewpoint
Nijmegen will present their findings on the challenges involved with preparing an application for ‘smaller’ cities in the 100,000 to 200,000 population range. To view this presentation please click here.

5. Preparing an application – a ‘larger’ cities viewpoint
Hamburg presented their findings on the challenges involved with preparing an application for cities with a population over 500,000 and how these challenges can be overcome. To view their presentation please click here.

6. The Benefits of Applying and Reapplying and Key elements for winning bid
Ljubljana has applied and been shortlisted for the European Green Capital Award on four occasions. Ljubljana presented the benefits of applying and reapplying for the award and on the key elements of their bid they believe were critical to winning e.g. gathering and presentation of information, local authority initiatives. To view this presentation please click here.

8. Building a European Green Capital Programme
Hamburg presented on their experience of applying for the EGCA, planning and building a programme as the 2011 European Green Capital and taking part in the European Green Capital Network for all previous winners and shortlisted cities. View presentation here.

9. Sharing Good Practices across Europe
The Secretariat launched the ‘ Urban Environment Good Practice & Benchmarking Report – Award Cycle 2016. This session highlighted the good practice examples from the 2016 applicant cities. View this presentation here
