ICLEI European Convention Declaration, Brussels

12-14 September 2011

Gathering in Brussels at the ICLEI European Convention 2011, political leaders of European cities and towns discussed their position on European and global sustainability strategies.

The Convention reiterated that European cities and towns are fundamental to progressive governance at regional, national and European level with 85% of the EU’s GDP being generated in cities; that European local and regional governments have a long track record in developing and implementing sustainable, innovative local policies; and that their close relationship with citizens and enterprises make them key players in determining appropriate sustainable strategies and measures on their territories.

The EU Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik spoke at the opening ceremony about the need to transform our economies stating that “Resource efficiency is about producing more value from less material input. In doing so, we will also help reduce our big environmental footprint, which is the essence of green growth. We want to de-couple economic growth from the use of resources and its environmental impacts. If we do it right, it will help us deliver on many goals, from shifting to a low carbon economy and building a greener transport system to promoting innovation and protecting nature.”

One of the major results of the Convention was the release of the ICLEI European Convention Declaration responding to the Europe 2020 Strategy and calling for greater support and recognition of their contribution to creating an economically smart, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable Europe.
