Mediterranean Neighbourhood

Regional cooperation

The Barcelona convention provides the legal basis for multilateral cooperation. It has 22 parties which are determined to protect the Mediterranean marine and coastal environment while boosting regional and national plans to achieve sustainable development.

Regional cooperation in the Mediterranean takes place under the Union for the Mediterranean, a multilateral partnership, created in Paris in 2008 by 43 Euro-Mediterranean Heads of State and Government.

One of the flagships endorsed by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) at its launch in Paris is the De-pollution of the Mediterranean which builds upon the Horizon 2020 Initiative for a cleaner Mediterranean, which aims to tackle by the year 2020 the top sources of the Mediterranean pollution that are said to account for around 80% of the overall pollution of the Mediterranean Sea.
