In the framework of the European Environment and Health Strategy, the kick-off meetings of the technical working groups are taking place during the "10 days of Environment and Health" (6-17 October, 2003).

The first meeting of the subgroup on "Integrated Monitoring of Endocrine Disruptors" was held in Warsaw, Poland, on 6-7 October, with the participation of representatives from Member States, Acceding countries and other stakeholders.

"A European Environment and Health Strategy" has been launched by the European Commission.

The overall aim of the new strategy on Environment and Health is to reduce the disease burden caused by environmental factors in Europe. In order to achieve this goal we have to better understand and identify health problems related to environmental exposure, which will allow us to prevent new health threats linked to environmental pollution. Special emphasis will be given to the most vulnerable groups in society, in particular children.

The new strategy on Environment and Health is a long-term vision. In the first cycle (2004 - 2010) it aims to establish a good understanding of the link between environmental factors and:

  • childhood respiratory diseases, asthma, allergies,
  • neurodevelopmental disorders
  • childhood cancer
  • endocrine disrupting effects.

Study on 12 endocrine disruptors substances completed
WRc-NSF, a UK-based environmental research organisation, has finalised a study evaluating 12 substances included in the endocrine disruptor list of priority actions. The results of the study will be submitted for consultation in April-May 2003 to stakeholders and various Scientific Committees in the Commission.

Study assesses global initiatives on endocrine disruptors
IEH, the UK's Medical Research Council Institute for Environment and Health, is conducting a study to assess the various initiatives - regulatory, testing and research activities - conducted around the world on endocrine disruptors. The aim of the study is to gather the latest information on activities concerning endocrine disruptors in Europe, the US and Japan. Based upon the finding IEH will make recommendations on the ways the EU can improve the co-ordination and the sharing of activities.
