EU Workshop - EMAS verification: key to credibility
Brussels, 24 June 2003
The EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) offers companies and other organisations an opportunity to improve their environmental performance. Citizens today expect business to live up to high environmental standards. EMAS is open to all economic sectors including public and private services.
The credibility, reliability and transparency of the EMAS scheme are ensured by external independent third party verification. The environmental experts who act as verifiers for EMAS play the key role in assessing and approving new applicants for the scheme. They are also uniquely placed to promote EMAS and to provide information on the scheme to interested organisations.
By organising the one-day EMAS Workshop targeted specifically at EMAS verifiers, we recognized their contribution to the scheme. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together verifiers from across Europe in order to discuss the development of EMAS and the important role verifiers play in ensuring the scheme's credibility.
