2,500 employees work under EMAS at the new BMW site in Leipzig, Germany

After only four months in operation, BMW (Bayerische Motorenwerke AG) completed the process for EMAS registration for the new site in Leipzig in September.

The new prestigious site in Sachsen-Anhalt has won a price for its architecture which makes use of most modern energy and heat recuperation technologies. Production will slowly rise to a maximum capacity of 650 cars per day of the BMW 3 series.

BMW emphasises the sustainability approach by constructing the site with maximum flexibility: when the type or number of cars has to be adjusted, this can be done without major re-construction works, thus ensuring that the jobs stay in the area.

More information about construction, production and sustainability can be found on the web site of the Leipzig site.

The environmental roadmap of the EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre

The EUROCONTROL Experimental Centre (EEC) is the research Directorate of EUROCONTROL, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation. It has been caring for the environment through proactive and preventative actions, such as recycling schemes (paper, batteries, wood and metal).

To better structure environmental management, a first environmental review was conducted in 2003. It revealed several areas for improvement, in particular regarding the waste water treatment plant and fuel tanks. The EMS pilot phase focuses on environmental analysis, writing procedures, environmental impacts and aspects, legal screening, training and communication. Several benefits are expected: legal compliance, energy savings, reduction of environmental risks, better quality control and staff motivation.

As part of its focus on contributing to a better understanding and awareness of the environmental impact of aviation, other departments of Eurocontrol, such as the IT department and the Directorate ATM Strategies (DAS/AEM) located in Brussels are currently investigating the application of EMAS to improve their environmental management system.

Volkswagen commits to expanding EMAS to all sites in the new Member States

In 1995, the Volkswagen site at Emden became the first EMAS registered car manufacturer site in the world. Since then, ten more sites have received the certificate and have shown very impressive environmental performance. Recently, Volkswagen has committed itself in a press release to upgrading the environmental management in all production sites in the new Member States from ISO 14001 to EMAS.

Günter Sager, in charge of environmental management at Volkswagen Group, reports: "EMAS presents a very efficient instrument to our internal organisation and the entire environmental protection at the Volkswagen Group. In the past, we have identified weak points through this tool, which their removal has led to significant savings in resources and costs."

For Peter Voermann, in charge of the Eco-management in the Emden site, the continual assessment of all production processes is most important: "Environmental protection for Volkswagen starts at the production process. In doing so, we avoid spills from the start and reduce consumption of resources. EMAS has helped to make environmental protection pay off more quickly." In his daily work, Peter Voermann receives assistance from 52 experts from different fields of environmental relevance.

A more efficient paint shop at the Emden site has saved some 30 percent of paint usage and has reduced volumes of solvents by 50 percent, thus not only protecting the environment, but contributing to the reduction of ground level ozone in the summer. The recycling quota has been improved to 67%, from 21% in 1994.

Volkswagen has pointed out that the company’s management regards EMAS as exceeding the requirements of the international ISO 14001 in many ways. These include: commitment for legal compliance with all environmental legislation, active pursuit of continual improvement and transparent communication with the public and interest groups. This is why in the future all Volkswagen production sites in the new Member States will upgrade their management systems to EMAS.

Volkswagen Environmental Report 2003-04 achieves first place in the Pacific Sustainability Index (PSI)

Volkswagen, a dedicated EMAS company since 1996, gained joint first place with General Motors (GM) in the current Pacific Sustainability Index of the Roberts Environmental Centre at the Clearmont McKenna College. The top ranking in the "Motor Vehicles and Parts Sector" was achieved with an overall score of 62, a feat no other company has been able to achieve. To date, the Roberts Environmental Centre has investigated more than 600 companies from Fortune Magazine's Global 500 and Fortune 1000 lists.

Volkswagen is praised for its continuity as a High Quality Sustainability Reporter: The environmental report shows the high priority given to the protection of the environment and social responsibility within the company and presents a large number of innovative and progressive ideas for the future. While attractive and easy to read, it is difficult for statisticians to analyse because of the graphics and charts scattered throughout the text. The frank publication of the materials installed in the vehicles is fantastic, says the Roberts Environmental Centre.

The Pacific Sustainability Index (PSI) was developed by the Roberts Environmental Center at Clearmont McKenna College in California, USA from a number of different assessment and certification standards. The basis was formed by the Ceres Principles, the GRI-Guidelines (Global Reporting Initiative), EMAS, ISO and the SAI-standards (Social Accountability International) amongst others. It looks at about 140 criteria from nine categories, although not all the categories are relevant to each sector.

The Index assesses companies with regard to the environment, social responsibility and economics, examining intentions, reporting and performance in each case. These are reflected in the report about the companies investigated, which is available in print and on the internet.

The PSI is intended to serve as a benchmark for the companies investigated to report within their own industry. Of course, it can also be used beyond the boundaries of the industries to illustrate best practices. Special interest groups such as financial analysts, NGOs, and the general public can use the detailed analysis or summary information to discover how individual companies act within their category and to look at the transparency and credibility of their reporting.

The analysis for each company and a breakdown to compare the 24 sectors involved can be found here

Car retail seller Peugeot Autohaus Ltd. joins EMAS in Austria

Among the car repair shops in Austria, EMAS is more and more becoming the standard EMS. Unlike some German car manufacturers such as Mercedes and BMW, who already produce under EMAS, and started to implement the Eco-management and Audit Scheme in the repair shops four years ago, Peugeot has no previous record of EMAS registration for production sites.

Two Peugeot repair sites in Vienna have now completed registration. A common target is to improve separation of waste, especially for plastic covers and Styrofoam from repairs. A special database for handling the contact details of waste handlers and recycler will be the first stepping stone.

More information on the Peugeot car repair shop and dealership is available from the website.

Frankfurt Airport (Fraport plc) presents environmental performance in first sustainability report

The Fraport Group has demonstrated its commitment to extend previous EMAS activities to a sustainability management system by publishing its first sustainability report. Since 1999, when Fraport registered under EMAS, the scheme has been perceived as a transparent tool to provide verified information for the environmental pillar of sustainability.

Executive Director Wilhelm Bender quotes "Sustainability is a well embedded target in our group and has a strong influence on operational management and social policy for 13,000 employees in the Rhein-Main region".

More than 100 environmental indicators are collected at the airport: The new Fraport Environmental Index (FUX) provides concise information by summing up the five most important aspects of air noise, traffic, air pollution, energy and water consumption in one index. Fraport offers several compensatory measures for stresses and strains which result from the operation of the Frankfurt Airport and the scheduled expansion. These include active and passive noise control.

Moreover, Fraport effectively contributes to reducing environmental impacts by exchanging the means of transport: Short term air traffic is transferred to the new ICE (Inter-City Express train) connecting hubs of Frankfurt and Cologne. In 2003, 1,460 flights were replaced reducing CO2 emissions by 4,300 tons.

The sustainability report can be ordered for free by calling 00 49 (0)800-2345679.

Lake Constance fleet sees further improvements stimulated by EMAS

The Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe (BSB - Lake Constance fleet) have passed the audit for revalidation of their EMAS registration for the second time. Together with the other EMAS registered tourism organisation at Lake Constance, the Mainau Ltd, BSB, the first EMAS registered ferry company in the EU, strives for further protection of Lake Constance, Europe’s largest resource of drinking water.

BSB and Mainau Ltd have included the preservation of nature and cultivated landscape in their environmental priorities. Several targets in the environmental programme of BSB have been exceeded in the 2001 - 2004 period: Oil consumption of 16 vessels has been reduced by 15 % by introducing a long-life lubricant. Further success stories include the reduction of detergents for the cleaning of the ships by 50 % and 100 % use of recycling paper by the administration

For 2005, the target is to reduce the emissions caused by operation of the vessels. A series of tests for reduction of soot particles has been started in co-operation with engine producer MTU. The Constance Polytechnic is also involved in testing new technologies for developing long lasting coatings for the vessels, which are expected to reduce the intervals for re-coating and use of solvents.

EMAS creates potential improvements for the supply chain

Automotive manufacturers Volkswagen AG and DaimlerCrysler have presented how their suppliers Peguform, KS Gleitlager, Johnson Controls Interiors und TI Automotive have benefitted from EMAS and ISO 14001 along the supply chain. The event was hosted by the Chamber of Commerce Lüneburg-Wolfsburg in Lower Saxony.

Risk management in the supply chain tends to become of greater importance, most of all in order to avoid shortage in delivery at suppliers’ sites, and this trend will continue.
Environment management has started to play an important role, when it comes to troubles, legal complaints and delivery bottlenecks. It was demonstrated that an EMS can further improve the companies’ ability to smooth the supply chain when it is integrated into health, safety and quality management.

EMASPOLI - Livorno Port Authority registered EMAS

The port of Livorno has developed traffic with all the major ports in the world. Every year approximately 5000 ships belonging to 200 shipping companies pass through the port, which handles 21 million tons of goods in 24 terminals. Now the port's management system has received EMAS registration.

Livorno Port Authority together with its consultant Sintesis implemented a project to improve and reduce environmental impacts of economic activities:

Apart from containerised traffic the port also deals with bulk liquids and solids, motor vehicles, cellulose pulp and timber, general cargo, minerals and iron manufacturing products, cereals, fruit and frozen products.

EMASPOLI (EMAS Port of Livorno) is the name of the LIFE project which can be defined as an Environmental Management System to be shared among all the companies working in the port of Livorno by sharing the environmental policy. And Livorno Port Authority proposes itself as the EMAS reference point for the local port community.

The aim is to raise the level of environmental awareness in the port sector by disseminating the contents of the project and providing the opportunity for environmental certification. And one of the reasons of the final success of the project is that no other port in Italy or in the Mediterranean basin has faced the problem of safeguarding the environment in such an organic way, since the Cinque Terre National Park is situated only 20 km away.

In 2001, the Livorno Port Authority elaborated a preliminary report on the state of environment in the port of Livorno . It was the first step, followed by the environmental policy and the environmental declaration which are two of the EMAS results achieved up to now.

Among other actions and means, the project also involves: an analysis of the environmental problems and how they are represented; a balance of environmental performances; a selection of significant environmental aspects; internal audits and actors forum.

About 6000 people work directly in the port of Livorno and the port produces 7.8% of the Local Economy's GDP. Livorno Port Authority is aware that the growing importance of port activities must be supported by an environmental policy able to mitigate the impact of the economic activities and EMAS represents an effective answer to this problem.

Berlin Tegel Airport joins EMAS

One of the most sensitive environment problems on airports is aircraft noise. This is why the Berlin Airport Ltd has now registered the Tegel Airport for EMAS to communicate the consistent commitment of the management to both stakeholders and neighbours.

To assess noise emissions, measures are not only carried out as required by the Airplane noise Legislation. Daily measurements are compiled and analysed for discrepancies from requires depart and landing pathways.

Apart from evaluation and reporting , future developments of environmental aspects are compiled in various scenarios, e.g. forecast on future demands for n oise protection. Voluntary noise protection is carried out to reduce noise levels to 55 db from 23.00 to 6.00 through passive protection.

The Berlin Airport Ltd is the sixth EMAS registered airport following the registration of Reina Sofia on Tenerife , Hamburg and Friedrichshafen (both in Germany ), Salzburg and Innsbruck (both in Austria ) .

Fly to Tenerife South: a new EMAS Airport

Joining a select and growing club of EMAS registered airports including Frankfort and Amsterdam Schiphol, the busy Reina Sofia airport recently completed implementation of his environmental management system by becoming registered.

AENA (AEROPUERTOS ESPAÑOLES Y NAVEGACIÓN AÉREA) promotes sustainable energy use and aims at improving efficiency of water use at the airport - particularly important as water supply is a major issue on the volcanic island of Tenerife.

The southern airport (Tenerife has another on the north of the island for domestic flights) covers an area of 12 km², leaving plenty of room for future expansion. The class A runway is 3200 m long and 40 m wide, big enough to accommodate the largest aircraft. Over 780,000 passengers (5,790 departures and arrivals) used the airport in January 04 (including the busy Christmas period).

One remaining environmental problem is the lack of public transport serving the airport. This means that nearly all tourists have to rely on individual coach or mini-bus transport to the resorts.
South Tenerife airport has 19 commercial establishments, seven cafeterias (including an Irish pub) and six restaurants, some of which are self-service or serve fast food.
EMAS registered airlines KLM, Lufthansa and their partners offer flights to Tenerife from Friedrichshafen, Hamburg, Salzburg, Schiphol and Innsbruck.

Austrian Railways resume EMAS for train stations program

Austrian Railways (ÖBB) chose the Vienna West train station to resume the validation project of the late 1990’s. The EMAS process started with an environmental review later in 2003, thus taking advantage of the ÖkoBusinessPlan funded by the City of Vienna. The ÖkoBusinessPlan aims at providing step-by-step access to environmental management. EMAS takes the key position among the measures.

Every day 70 000 travelers and 220 trains profit from the Austrian Railways’ commitment to EMAS. Several measures are taken and focused on the renovated station: New waste separation bins are implemented, separating glass and paper from the material flow. Improvement of separation is the first step to a separation plan and common waste disposal all over Austrian Railways’ fleet and sites.

Further measures include implementation of a filter package to reach lower limits in oil separators, a construction recycling project and a green book for nature conservation beside the railway tracks.

LIFE ENV/03: Implementation of EMAS in a fishing and leisure port

The port of A Pobra do Caramiñal in Galicia is one of the main destination for frozen fish in Spain (111.019 tons in 2000) and big long-distance fishing vessels arrive to the port, an activity which has impacts on the environment. This activity is complemented by the fishing of fresh fish and the cultivation of muzzles near the port. Furthermore, 9.797 tons of salt was received in 2000. Finally, there is a leisure area which will be amplified in the beginning of 2004 in order to have facilities for 300 leisure boats.

Therefore, the port of A Pobra represents a wide range of the activities that can be found in fishing and leisure ports and can be used as a role model for the future implementation of EMAS in other of the 122 fishing and leisure ports of Galicia.

The implementation of EMAS in fishing and leisure port will be an important step towards integrating the environment in the economic activities in a sector where environmental considerations traditionally have not played a major role, and where an improved adhesion to EMAS in the sector could have significant environmental end socio-economic benefits.

Take the EMAS Bus to Agenda 21

For the 250 000 citizens of Lübeck area in northern Germany’s Schleswig Holstein, the EMAS Logo accompanies them to work.

The Public Services Lübeck Ltd. (Stadtwerke Lübeck GmbH), together with the Ministry of the Environment of the State, opted for a City Bus to carry the EMAS Logo to promote the scheme and Local Agenda 21.

The overall costs of 15.000€ were co-funded by the Ministry (50%). The sign on the bus was up to 5.000€ including blueprint, graphic design and printing of he film; renting of the advertising space for five years amounted to 10.000€.

Within the mission statement of Lübeck for Agenda 21, acquiring a high number of EMAS registrations is a key indicator. This was a main motivation for the Public Services Ltd to go for EMAS, as the registered organisations are frequently quoted in connection with sustainability.

Having entered a campaign for funding the introduction of EMAS and any related marketing measures, the bus was the best option: The driver is providing the groups Environmental Statement; leaflets outline the purpose of EMAS to the passengers.

In the meantime, the SHE division received an Opel Zafira powered with natural gas in the same design. In corporation with a renowned model producer, a HO scale model of the bus has been produced as a give-away for favoured customers.

Lufthansa CityLine: EMAS helped saving half a million Euro in regional air traffic

As a reward for their all-round environmental management performance Lufthansa CityLine was awarded its second consecutive EMAS certificate for the Cologne, Munich and Hamburg sites. The forerunner is therefore the only airline worldwide to hold both EMAS and ISO 14001 certificates since 1999.

„ We go for making air transport as environmentally friendly as possible,” CityLine CEO Karl-Heinz Köpfle says outlining the corporate philosophy. „We emphasize our own initiative and voluntary commitment rather than on fuel taxes distorting competition“.

Apart from yearly internal and external audits the whole system of environmental precautions has to undergo a revision by verifiers for the revalidation at least every three years. In addition, the Environmental Statement provides information on the status and the goals of City Line’s environmental policy.

The audited environmental management system comprises all departments of Lufthansa CityLine including the technical, administration and air transport departments. Continuous improvement is the maxim. Next to the permanent enlargement of the fleet with new, modern and hereby environmentally friendly planes, the reduction of noises and emissions are priority goals.

Having an average fleet age of 5,5 years CityLine belongs to the European „Youngsters“. Canadair Jets 100, 200 und 700 from Bombardier provide CityLine with the most silent planes of today.

An especially successful environmental goal was the continuous optimization of board loading, which saves flight weight and fuel. „About half a million Euro a year,“ CityLine delegate for the environment Charles S. Hofer is happy to observe. „Environmental management pays off, ecologically and economically.

EMAS Ahoy!

The “Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe”, the Lake Constance cruise ship company operates in an ecologically sensitive region. As well as providing drinking water for four and a half million people, Lake Constance is home to numerous water birds, animals and plant life. The area is also a major recreational space and holiday destination. Because of Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe’s awareness of its responsibility for the environment, the company introduced EMAS on its sites and on its vessels and were first validated by an independent verifier in January 2001. Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe is thus the first inland water shipping company in Europe with a validated environment management system according to EMAS.

The company owns 16 craft which during the season from April to October transport around 3 million passengers to almost all the tourist attractions of the Lake Constance region. In total the ships travel 350.000 km per year. Legal compliance is a prerequisite for Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe, but the company’s dedication to environmental protection goes far beyond. This was the reason for choosing EMAS as its environmental management system. The environmental objectives listed in its Environmental Statement cover all the environmental aspects of the company: installation of a separate waste collection system on vessels and administrative sites, 40% increase of use of recycled paper for promotional material, decrease in paint and detergents used on board ships, to name but a few. The implementation of the environmental programme 2001-2004 was estimated at a total cost of approximately 25.000 euro.

With 150 staff and around 30 seasonal workers, internal and external communication is an important tool to motivate employees and raise awareness among customers. With this in mind, Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe is proud to demonstrate its participation in EMAS by putting the EMAS logo on its ships.

The EMAS train is gathering steam!

Since mid of September citizens of Cologne, Germany, can use an "EMAS train" to travel across their city. The Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe AG (KVB), the public transport company of the city of Cologne is one of the first municipal transport companies to have implemented EMAS. The company has not only reduced its environmental impact considerably and established an environmental management system but also proven to be innovative in raising public awareness of environmental issues and networking with other environmental transport activities. For example, they have negotiated attractive rates and special conditions with car sharing organizations for all their season ticket holders. Their latest scoop is the "EMAS train"; a tram which displays prominently the new EMAS logo in large format on its coachwork and provides more information on EMAS to passengers inside. This innovative use of the logo will enable interested passengers to know more about the environmental management system used by KVB and sets an excellent example on how to reach out to and inform transport users and citizens in general about EMAS.
