The environment wins in the football World Championship in Germany 2006
“The new World Champions stadium “Allianz-Arena”in Munich and the “Franken-Stadion”in Nuremberg are the first world championship stadiums registered with EMAS”stated Bavaria’s Minister for Environment Werner Schnappauf, during his visit to the new Allianz-Arena in Munich, together with Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, the “Umweltpakt Bavaria ambassador”and president of FC Bayern Munich.

During the construction of the stadium in Munich, environmental concerns played an important role. In addition to considering the impacts on the soil when building the Arena and the parking lots, the interiors are free from tropical wood and energy saving bulbs are used.

Bavaria is one of the regions in Europe with the most EMAS registered organisations. This success is based on the Umweltpakt Bavaria, founded in 1995 as a joint initiative of the state and enterprises, which has so far convinced about 5,000 organisations of the benefits of the voluntary environmental scheme.

Madrid 2012 Olympic Office registers under EMAS

On 10 March 2005, the Madrid 2012 Olympic Office registered with EMAS, a move that endorses the commitment of the Olympic candidacy towards the environment. The news was confirmed by Madrid Councillor, Mariano Zabía.

Last January, Madrid’s candidacy also received the ISO 14001 certificate. The Olympic candidacy had to audit their activities and analyse any kind of environmental impact it may generate. The Madrid 2012 Olympic Office has been reducing environmental impacts in its daily activities, as well as when promoting activities and competitions.

“The awarding of EMAS registration and ISO 14001 certificate is very important because it is a local administration that recognizes us and certifies the quality of all the activities we develop”, affirmed Antonio Lucio, Environmental Director for Madrid 2012´s Executive Office. Mr Lucio participated in the event which presented the travelling exhibition about the environmental proposals of the candidacy.

The Madrid Councillor, who described the EMAS scheme as the “most demanding in Europe”, thinks that the planned infrastructure for Madrid 2012 will also receive EMAS registration in the future. The Council of Madrid has introduced a pilot plan to replace municipal vehicles with environmentally friendlier ones with the introduction of six hybrid cars in the municipal fleet. The new cars reduce fuel consumption by up to 40% (compared to a conventional petrol engine), emissions by up to 60% and noise by 1.2 decibels.

EMAS registration: an important step in environmental efforts of the Kiimassuo Waste Management Center

As a result from a long-range environmental work the operations of Loimi-Hämeen Jätehuolto Ltd and CRT Finland Ltd at Kiimassuo Waste Management Center were registered to EMAS. Both companies have been pioneers in their own sectors in Finland. Loimi-Hämeen Jätehuolto Oy is one of the companies adopting the latest municipal waste management technology. CRT-Finland Oy uses the latest technology in recycling raw materials of the cathode-ray tubes for industrial use. Thanks to the valuable work of the both companies the overall recycling rate in the area has increased and environmental impacts of the waste management decreased.

The environmental statement has been sent for example to the owners of the companies, authorities, companies operating in the same sector, financiers, policymakers, customers and partners in co-operation. The report was also sent to the representatives of the inhabitants of the municipalities owning the company. The environmental statement is available on the company's Internet site and it has been distributed in different occasions, also in English. Reporting will be developed in the future by using more the information given in the environmental statement in informing the neighbouring area. Environmental matters that concern inhabitants will also be communicated more specifically in public occasions and in the customer magazine of the company. The EMAS logo has been attached to some of the communication material. The logo will be used even more broadly in future.

Olympic effort to register Winter Olympic Games Turin 2006

The organizing committee of the Winter Olympic Games 2006 in Turin (TOROC) completed the first step of its EMAS implementation in September 2004.

At present, the scope is limited to the general planning activities of the event, but during the course of 2004 it will be extended - according to the construction works delivery by the Agenzia Torino 2006 - to the Games staging phase, including the management of the competition and non-competition venues (8 sites in greater Turin, 10 municipalities), the test events execution and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, taking place February 10 - 26 and March 10-19, respectively. The municipalities of Cesana (Bobsleigh, Skeleton, Luge, Alpine Skiing, Biathlone) , have received its EMAS registration, too.

Among the 49 activities ranked highest in the assessed environmental aspects, only three are covered by the current scope of EMAS: Production of advertising and information material, construction of the Hockey 2 facility and operative management of TOROC facilities.

The environmental performance of sponsors and suppliers will predominantly be measured by the ratio of sponsors and suppliers having received the Environment 2006 Logo, which requires suppliers to develop policies and programmes aimed at environmental protection, social responsibility, education and environmental communication and provide goods and services that correspond to the environmental criteria set out by TOROC based on requirements for the most common international eco-labels.

Four annual environmental audits are intended to be carried out on each of the goods and service providers. Constructions sites run by Agenzia Torino 2006 are audited every 6 months.

In an ambitious move, TOROC aims at making the Games a neutral event for the climate by setting off 100% of CO 2 and green house gas emissions through collecting funds for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.

Overall production of waste on Olympic sites is intended to be limited to 1600 tons with 68% recycled and 30% sent to energy recovery.

Sustainable Olympic Winter Games

TOROC, the organizing committee of the Olympic Winter Games in Turin 2006 has recently started to register the Winter Games 2006 for EMAS. TOROC was established to organize, among others, the sports events as well as the opening and closing ceremonies and to manage the Olympic villages, which will host the athletes and the technical staff. The Committee will co-ordinate, for example, the transport and medical services, set up the temporary structures needed for athletes and visitors, plan and promote the cultural program, organize accommodation and transportation for athletes, sports staff, the media and all other personnel involved in the event.

EMAS was chosen as the most suitable tool to manage and interrelate all environmental activities and to communicate to stakeholders all achievements and performances. The project will be carried out in two phases: First, registration will be sought for the planning and arranging of the event. This phase includes the activities preceding the management of the competition venues and focuses especially on the event's planning and the venue's arrangement, including their design and building. TOROC aims at developing an EMS by September 2003 and at publishing the Environmental Statement by spring 2004.

In a second step this registration will be expanded to the management and running of the event. The existing EMS from the first phase will be expanded accordingly. A renewal of the registration covering the additional aspects of the event management is targeted for March 2005. The development of the project can be followed soon on the TOROC website: www.torino2006.org
