Portuguese printers ready to print under EMAS

A major step ahead has been taken by Eurodois - Artes Gráficas, Lda. and Euro-Scanner - Reprodução Gráfica Via Electrónica, Lda., two Portuguese offset printers, which have extended their commitment to environmentally friendly business to EMAS implementation.

Eurodois Artes Gráficas Lda is one of the largest Portuguese printing companies, founded in 1988, and it is also certified according to the ISO 9002 quality management system. The company is located in Sintra west of Lisbon.

Reprodução Gráfica Via Electrónica, Lda. was the first in Portugal to use waterless offset printing technology, which works with recyclable materials like silicone based plates and provides excellent prints on recycled paper.

Printing has been one of the sectors which has flourished under EMAS and provides one of the biggest potentials for promoting EMAS along the value chain through business-to-business links.

Fast food environmental management

McDonald’s has once again found its commitment to the environment rewarded, after 43 franchise companies of the food corporation signed the Umweltpakt Bavaria.

‘Umweltpakt Bavaria – sustainable economy for the 21st century’; this is what the certificates of the 43 Bavarian franchise holders say. Its participants commit themselves to environmental protection activities exceeding legal requirements.

McDonald's has managed to increase the recycling quota to over 90 % in restaurant packaging. A spectacular measure has been taken by switching trucks to bio fuel from waste edible oils only. Considerable cost reductions of 30 % have been made by re-using energy from exhaust kitchen air for heating of customer areas in the restaurants.

Bavaria’s Minister of the Environment, Werner Schnappauf, pointed out that customers benefit from more transparency through McDonald’s official certification. Moreover, 53 suppliers of the chain are certified according to ISO 14001 or registered for EMAS, including well known producers like Develey or Hochland, who are members of the Umweltpakt Bavaria themselves.

More information about participants, conditions and funding under the Umweltpakt Bavaria are available from: www.stmugv.bayern.de/de/wirtschaft/umw_pakt/teilnahme.htm

The Doors open to Corporate Social Responsibility at Stora Enso Kabel Mill

In July Stora Enso gave the green light to the biomass electrification of Kabel Mill in Hagen (Westphalia). Together with the local electricity provider Mark-E, Euro 50 Mill. is being invested to provide this Stora Enso plant with electricity and process steam from 214 000 tons of wood residue.

Still, the Kabel based subsidiary of the world’s second largest manufacturer of cardboard and paper is striving for the highest standards in environmental performance and Corporate Social Responsibility.

“ For more than 100 Years we feel obliged to our hometown Hagen. Owing to the principle of sustainability Stora Enso Kabel Mill aims at a long lasting partnership with clients, suppliers, the City of Hagen and the locals,” MD Michael Kohlhaas comments explaining the objectives for CSR policy. The Westphalia Museum, the Basketball youth teams of Brandt Hagen and the soup-kitchen for the underprivileged, to name a few, enjoy the lasting partnership and commitment of Stora Enso Kabel.

Every year the leading private business in town provides 16 apprentices in 5 categories with a job, recently creating the new branch for software engineering. Students enjoy theses topics and internships, while Stora Enso Kabel Mill keeps investing in quality of neighbors: Euros 1,75 Million invested in biofilters for the waste water treatment plant had no other aim but to further reduce olfactory harassment to an even lower level.

Surfing on the web wave

Pioneering is a natural attitude of an organisation that wants to take the lead in its field of operations. Globally operating forest products company Stora Enso is strongly flagging for comprehensive environmental management systems and EMAS in its mills and units.

The possibility to enhance dialogue with stakeholders was one of the leading ideas, when Stora Enso Timber decided to pioneer in web-based EMAS statements in 2001. Statements were built as part of the Group's internet pages, allowing surfing around the topics that are most interesting to the visitor. The project also had a more practical rationale: to be able to streamline the publishing process, language versions and updates, to combine additional information to the statements, and to save costs by offering printed copies only to those who want them.

Stora Enso Timber is one of the industry leaders in the globally operating wood products business. The company has 22 sawmills in Europe, three new ones being built, and more in planning phase. Stora Enso Timber has grown rapidly through merges and acquisitions in five years. Environmental management systems and consequently EMAS will be applied in all units during the coming years.

At Nordic sawmills the first EMAS statements were registered already some years ago. Eight mills will now publish the annual updates with 2002 details added to the 2001 web-statements in the internet. These are the first updates, also approved as web-versions and pdf-files only, in accordance with the EMAS requirements.
The process of making web-statements is different from traditional printed ones. The text, graphs, photos and structure of reports were carefully considered to match the possibilities and requirements of the web as a communication channel.

The process was created together with Finnish and Swedish verifiers and authorities. Please take a look at www.storaenso.com/emas/timber and give feedback! For more information contact the Communications Manager, Terhi Bergius, Terhi.Bergius@storaenso.com
