EMAS Newsletter – Issue 06 / December 2013

Dear EMAS Community,

We are ending the year with several very exciting developments in our community, all furthering the visibility of EMAS! Firstly, since 19 November the EMAS presence on Facebook - the "Sustainable Production and Consumption Unit" page - has merged with the EU Ecolabel and changed its page name to "EMAS & EU Ecolabel". Thanks to all the followers who "liked" us under our prior name. You can now use the re-named platform to exchange views both about the EU Ecolabel and EMAS. Please "like" the new page, and we look forward to hearing from you!

Furthermore, the European Commission would like to inform EMAS registered hotels and other accomodations in particular about an opportunity to promote your environmental performance! The Commission has been receiving inquiries from hotel booking portals that are interested in using environmental labels such as EMAS as a search category in their online booking engines. The Commission is currently checking the possibility of providing an automatically updated list of all EMAS registered hotels to booking sites such as HRS, Travelife and bookdifferent. In order to use this momentum of interest in sustainable tourism the Commission is currently developing suggestions of how to further support EMAS registered hotels in promoting their environnemental management efforts.

And last, but certainly not least, we are delighted to announce that the application phase for the EMAS Awards 2014 has been opened. The topic will be Effective eco-innovations supporting improvements in environmental performance. You can download the application form from the EMAS Awards website and send it to your national Competent Body until 7 February 2014. The EMAS Awards ceremony will take place on the evening of 7 April 2014, in the framework of the Industrial GreenTec fair in Hannover, Germany. This will provide an excellent opportunity for the EMAS registered organisations to network with other stakeholders in the green business community! To support networking and promotion activities, the European Commission also intends to host a stand at fair, presenting 'EMAS and Eco-Innovation'. 50 of the EMAS Awards nominees will be given the opportunity to present their organisation at this stand through roll-up banners sponsored by the European Commission. So don't miss this opportunity for some extra business publicity, and enter the EMAS Awards competition today!

For now, we wish you a happy holiday season, and as always…
Enjoy the read!

Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment
