EMAS Newsletter – Issue 05 / December 2012

Dear EMAS Community,

2012 ends with a highlight for us! It was a real pleasure for me to open the 2012 EMAS Awards on 29 November. This year, the awards ceremony was held at the beautifully restored historic complex "Les Halles des Tanneurs" in Brussels, Belgium.

I want to extend my congratulations to all of the companies and organisations that won this year's EMAS Awards. Thank you, too, to all the guests who let us know how much they enjoyed the event. We had a great time hosting it. The EMAS Awards' topic this year was water management - a fitting theme as 2012 is also the European Water Year. The European Commission has recently published a Blueprint to Safeguard Europe's Water Resources. In the Blueprint actions that concentrate on better implementation of current water legislation are outlined. All EMAS registered organisations in general, but the EMAS Awards nominees and winners in particular, are already role models when it comes to implementing many of these water efficiency measures.

I commend all nominees and winners for their hard work and persistence in becoming more sustainable organisations.

Enjoy our last newsletter of the year, and have a happy holiday season and good start to the new year!

Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment
