EMAS Newsletter – Issue 04 / September 2013

Dear EMAS Community,

We hope you enjoyed your holidays and did not forget about your responsibility to the environment during the days of rest. No matter how you traveled or where you have been- from China to Trinidad and Tobago and to the gates of Heaven, with EMAS Global there are no excuses!

Tourism is one of the sectors that is most affected by environmental challenges and is therefore making great efforts in terms of environmental management. Companies in the EMAS community recently took steps forward in this field, too: a workshop in Brussels brought together hotels that are EMAS registered or implementing other environmental responsibility schemes, with the aim of fostering more eco-innovation in their sector; while beyond the EU, a video documentary was produced that shows how EMAS is being introduced in the tourism sector of Trinidad and Tobago.

Good news for the EMAS community came from other sectors as well: The second EMAS Global site in China - UPM's paper mill in Changshu - has been officially validated, and VW continues to improve its application of EMAS with the "Ideas Management" initiative.

And if you don't believe us saying that even Heaven is nearing EMAS registration, just read this edition's news items and find out about what The Catholic Church in Austria is doing to take responsibility for the environment.

Enjoy the read!

Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment
