EMAS Newsletter - Issue 02 / June 2012

Dear EMAS Community,

We all have something to celebrate! In this EMAS Newsletter, we are excited to announce that EMAS registered businesses came in first in the latest ranking of sustainability reports in Germany. Both in the categories for large companies and for small and medium-sized companies, being EMAS registered not only ensured that organisations’ environmental performance surpassed that of other businesses, but also put these organisations at an advantage when it came to compiling systematic and transparent environmental reports.

We are also delighted to present you with new examples of one of EMAS great strengths: EMAS is adaptable to the needs of a very diverse range of organisations – thereby convincing an ever wider scope of policy makers and institutions to implement the scheme! Be it EMAS’ benefits for a network of international schools who decided to implement EMAS with the support of the EU’s Comenius Programme; its usefulness as a basis for an Integrated Management System for climate change mitigation and adaptation adopted in local and regional authorities; or its endorsement by the French government who reaffirmed its commitment to promote EMAS as the premium environmental management instrument in France.

This issue of our newsletter re-affirms how dynamically and successfully EMAS’ reach continues to spread!

Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment
