EMAS Newsletter – Issue 01 / March 2013

Dear EMAS Community,

In 2013 EMAS will continue to take your environmental management to the next level! Unicredit in Italy have set a shining example by registering their more than 4000 sites! The following actions can help you take your sustainability performance that one step further in 2013 as well: 1.) invest strategically in community initiatives, 2.) increase stakeholder engagement, 3.) improve communications. So really, the key to outstanding environmental performance is taking EMAS beyond just 'ticking the boxes', to making it a priority that management, staff and even the local community are truly motivated about. This is also confirmed by a recent study that examined EMAS' relation with corporate culture – you can read about that below. Did you read about Dale Vince from the UK who is so passionate about EMAS that, through environmental management, he has turned a small English football club into a beacon of sustainability - that is even changing local fans' dietary habits? This 'hands on' mentality motivates us all.

Talking about motivation, did you know that the European Commission has declared 2013 the 'Year of Air' and that we will be focusing particularly on further developing our clean air policies? As EMAS registered organisations you are already contributing to this goal - reducing emissions is by now a 'classic' part of environmental management. But how about the more novel performance indicators, like 'biodiversity'? If you are one of the companies that needs some inspiration to start developing a strategy for your impact on biodiversity, we suggest you have a look at our article about the Business and Biodiversity Campaign.

Enjoy the read!

Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment
