EMAS Newsletter – Issue 01 / March 2014

Dear EMAS Community,

Spring is in the air and changes have been afoot at the EMAS Helpdesk. As most of you have likely heard, the Helpdesk changed in hands in January and is now being run by a consortium comprised of the organisations adelphi (Berlin), Arctik (Brussels) and 21 Solutions (Brussels). We are pleased to welcome our new Helpdesk partners. The European Commission certainly looks forward to cooperating with them to promote EMAS in the tourism sector and to make the EMAS Register more user-friendly, among other endeavors.

Following along our 2014 theme of “resource efficiency”, the Commission’s circular economy unit is working to emphasize also working on a number of initiatives in our circular economy unit, emphasizing eco-innovation and helping create green business opportunities for EMAS-registered companies and other environmentally conscious organisations. The pilot phases of the Organisation Environmental Footprint and Product Environmental Footprint are underway, both of which offer potential tools for EMAS-registered organisations. All EMAS companies are encouraged to look into participating in the pilot phases!

But first, the next big event to look forward to is the 2014 EMAS Awards Ceremony! This year’s theme of “Effective eco-innovations supporting improvements in environmental performance” attracted 29 excellent nominees from 14 member states. A jury of eight environmental management experts has selected the winners in each of the six categories. On the evening of 7 April 2014, we will all find out who they are!

The Awards ceremony will take place at the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) in Hannover, Germany, in the framework of the Industrial GreenTec fair. We look forward to seeing many of you in attendance or at the fair. If you can’t make it, be sure to check out the articles below, on the EMAS Awards website and in the next addition of our newsletter. We know you will be there in spirit!

Enjoy the read!

Janez Potočnik, European Commissioner for the Environment
