The EMAS logo is an attractive visual tool designed to highlight an organisation’s commitment to improving its environmental performance while guaranteeing the reliability and credibility of the information provided. The logo is designed for EMAS-registered organisations to demonstrate their dedication to environmental protection. It raises awareness about the scheme in the public, among interested parties and among organisations willing to improve their environmental performance.
With the introduction of EMAS III, only one logo is used by EMAS-registered organisations. The logo uses the wording ‘Verified Environmental Management’ in conjunction with the registration number. The logo may be used only by registered organisations and only as long as their registration is valid. Any environmental information published by a registered organisation may bear the EMAS logo provided such information makes references to the organisation’s latest environmental statement or updated environmental statement.
The EMAS logo without a registration number can be used by stakeholders for EMAS-related marketing and promotional purposes. However, the use of the logo must not suggest that the user is registered where it is not the case.
The following explanations and examples are intended to give EMAS-registered organisations and other EMAS stakeholders some guidance on how and when to use the EMAS logo.
Consumers as well as public and private purchasers are becoming
more and more aware of environmental problems and are increasingly
turning to producers and service providers who demonstrate a commitment
to environmental concerns.
Producing and operating in an environmentally responsible way has thus become
an important comparative advantage. Communicating this environmental commitment
is therefore vital. This relates to all organisations, most obviously to
companies selling products or services, but also to schools or hospitals
wishing to raise their profile amongst their target groups as well as to
public administrations aiming to influence people and businesses in their
constituency to produce and consume in a sustainable way.
The purpose of the logo is to inform target clients and the public at large, that an organisation has established and implemented an environmental management system according to EMAS, and that this organisation systematically, objectively and consistently evaluates its own environmental performance. The use of the EMAS logo signifies an organisation’s active involvement in environmental protection. Moreover, the logo indicates that an organisation provides publicly available, periodic environmental statements which have been validated by an independent verifier.
