History

Built at the beginning of the 20th century in eclectic style, Hanover’s Neues Rathaus (New City Hall) is a magnificent, castle-like building of the era of Wilhelm II. It is located outside of Hanover’s historic centre at the southern edge of the city and is set within the ten-hectare Maschpark. The building’s golden-topped dome rises an impressive 97.73 metres above the park, and its lofty viewing platform offers a spectacular view over all of Hannover.

The Neues Rathaus is the residence of the mayor, the head of the city’s municipal administration. It is also here that the Hanover city government’s sessions are held, as well as receptions for official guests of the city and art exhibitions. The Neues Rathaus also houses the Gartensaal restaurant, which overlooks the lake behind the building and offers regional and international cuisine in a stylish atmosphere.
