13th European Forum on Eco-Innovation
SITE VISIT (27 NOVEMBER 2012 – 3 hours)
Details: Visit to the new Paper Mill
This state-of-the-art facility, incorporating technological innovation throughout its systems and manufacturing processes, represents a total investment of approximately 600 million euros (including projects in energy production) and has directly created 350 new jobs for highly skilled workers.
As the widest UWF paper machine in the world, it has the capacity to produce 500 thousand tons of paper a year, at a top speed of 1,800 metres a minute. The jumbo reels produced are 10.4 metres long with a diameter of 3.85 metres, each one comprising 80 tons of paper.
With the new machine up and running, the Setúbal complex now integrates 100% of the pulp produced on site. Portucel Soporcel Group’s annual production capacity for UWF paper has risen to 1.6 million tons, making it Europe’s leading manufacturer of this type of paper.
The group has successfully pursued a strategy of innovation and developed its own brands, which today account for more than 64% of its manufacturing output. Foremost amongst these is the Navigator brand, the world’s bestselling brand of premium office paper.
Participants will be split into two groups of 50. A presentation of the innovations of the industrial process will be illustrated by a tour to the main areas of the pulp and paper mill.
