The Committee on Trade in Wild Fauna and Flora

Background

The Commission is assisted in its work by a Committee, composed of representatives from Member State Management Authorities and chaired by the Commission (Article 18 of Council Regulation (EC) No 338/97). Many of the Articles of the Regulation refer to implementation measures to be adopted by the Commission in accordance with the Committee procedure. Proposals for such measures require a positive opinion from the Committee and this opinion is established by a ‘qualified majority’. If the Committee is unable to give a positive opinion, the Commission must immediately submit its proposal to the Council.

The Committee meets between three and four times a year in Brussels.
