Background
informationThe 14th Conference of the Parties (COP) to CITES took place from 3 to 15 June 2007, in the Hague, Netherlands. This was the first CITES COP held within the European Union and the first in which a Ministerial meeting was organized to address key issues for the future of the Convention.
Although the European Community is not yet a Party to the Convention (due to the fact that the CITES "Gaborone" amendment on regional organisations is not yet in force), it participated in the CoP, with observer status. The position of the European Community on the proposals tabled for the COP was decided in advance through a Decision of the EC Council of Ministers on the basis of a proposal from the Commission and was expressed at the COP jointly by the EU Member States.
