Food supply

The food supply chain sector is a complex collective of diverse businesses that together supply much of the food energy consumed by the world population. The entities included in this definition are mainly the food processing industry, the packaging industry and food retailers.

Although farmers are not considered within the scope of this sector (they are considered within the agriculture sector, which is subject to specific focus in the platform), the food supply industry has a high dependency on agricultural and fishery supply chains. More particularly this industry is directly dependent on the services delivered by ecosystems, ranging from water cycling and purification, to climate regulation and soil formation.
