Biodiversity is being seen as the foundation for all economic, social and cultural life on earth. Climate change, pollution and unsustainable use of natural resources – could damage all natural resources that all of us, including businesses, depend on.

Natural capital is the foundation for economic prosperity and wellbeing on Earth given that all production is ultimately an output of natural capital: our planet's living natural resources including ecosystems that provide essential goods and services, from fertile soil, clean air and multi-functional forests to productive land and seas. Climate change, pollution and unsustainable use of resources could damage natural resources that all of us, including businesses, depend on. It is therefore crucial to assess and monitor the state of our natural capital, looking beyond non-living resources, in order to ensure a truly circular economy that contributes to safeguarding and enriching natural capital, whilst providing job opportunities in new markets for sustainable goods and services.

An increasing number of Business and Biodiversity initiatives have been set up in the last few years. Some of these initiatives are global others are local, representing different streams and aspects of business and industries and vary in content, shape, size and form. However, they all have one thing in common; they bring together businesses, engaging the private sector with nature conservation as well as building the business case for protecting biodiversity.

The European B@B Platform is linked to other on-going initiatives at international and national levels. The Platform will regularly liaise to facilitate exchange of information with national platforms in Europe and other global initiatives.
