The Jury, chaired by Cristina García-Orcoyen Tormo, Chief Executive of the Fundación Entorno-BCSD España, is made up of 14 environmental experts representing industry, NGOs, academia and public authorities. The Jury short-listed three candidates in the Management, Product and Process categories and one company in the International Cooperation category. The winners in each category will be announced and receive their awards at a ceremony in the Bibliothèque Solvay, Brussels, on 2 June 2010, during Green Week, the Commission's annual environment conference.

The 2010 Business Awards were open to companies from all EU Member States and candidate countries. Companies had to succeed in national award schemes before being nominated by national award bodies for the European Business Awards. The finalists for the European Business Awards chosen are:

Justification:	The Jury recognised this project for “Walking the talk” for energy efficient buildings. This project is an energy monitoring and control system which is being used by a major retailer to achieve substantial reduction in energy use. The Jury highlighted: The development and application of a smart energy system The use of data from the smart energy system to achieve substantial energy reductions by a major retailer The application makes very sound business sense for the provider of the smart energy system and for the retailer This is application of a sound energy management system which could and should be copied by others.

Justification:	Special commendation in the Product category The Jury considered this project an elegant, low cost, attractive and easily adopted solution to the biodiversity problem of bird kill by electricity transmission lines. This project deserves special mention but does not fit easily into the criteria for a European Business Award for the Environment. The Jury highlighted: Electricity transmission lines cause widespread loss of important bird species thus contributing to the reduction in biodiversity This innovation is a simple means of reducing bird kill which can be installed with minimum interference to electricity transmission The innovation is a durable product which allows birds to access lines and pylons without risk The product will have widespread benefits for biodiversity and in turn the social benefit of biodiversity

Justification:	The Jury recognised this project for its production of ‘ecosurfactants’ through a natural fermentation process, utilising fully renewable raw materials instead of fossil resources. The Jury highlighted: An Ecosurfactant is produced through natural fermentation at a temperature of 30 0C and at atmospheric pressure so that little energy is required Candida Bombicola, a type of yeast, produces a surfactant based on combining sugar and a fatty acid The process, which is already in routine use, starts from a fully renewable raw material instead of fossil resources

The Jury highlighted: A new method, already effectively used in industry, to produce thermoplastic sheets, pipes and rods was developed The primary product (plastic granules) is not completely melted for the moulding process, but only surface-fused This leads to massive energy savings and reduces production costs by 50%
