Elpa d.o.o. |
| Project title: |
Rail Brake Anti-Noise System Bremex-Annsys |
| Description: |
The Slovenian company, ELPA, has developed a new rail brake anti-noise system – BREMEX ANNSYS – which significantly reduces the high level of noise (screeching) at shunting railway stations, which can reach 150 dB or more and occurs in the frequency range from 150 to 3500 Hz. The system operates directly on the brake rail and wheel flange – the direct source of the noise - and is therefore highly efficient in environmental terms. Noise is reduced by as much as 99.9%. There is also reduced wear and tear on the rails, wheel flanges, and reduced vibrations and jolts as an indirect, positive economic benefit. |

Cognis Ireland manufactures speciality chemicals used in the extraction of non-ferrous metals. A key element in the manufacturing process involves the use of large quantities of toluene as a reaction solvent. Through their research and development programme, Cognis identified the possibility of distilling the processed toluene rather than washing it, thus reducing the environmental impact of the process. Additionally, Cognis identified the possibility of recovering the distillation residues as a supplementary fuel through their ‘waste to energy’ plant. |

SolarFrost Research Dr. Kunze Oeg |
| Project title: |
SolarFrost – An Alternative Cooling Technology |
| Description: |
SolarFrost is a newly invented cooling technology, which can operate at significantly lower input temperatures (about 80°C) than conventional cooling systems (about 150°C). SolarFrost cooling machines are simple to build and do not require high technology elements. In a hot climate with sufficient solar radiation they can compete economically with conventional cooling methods.
SolarFrost machines are therefore perfectly suited for developing countries and all countries with a hot climate. These machines should help to conserve agricultural products in less developed areas. Another application of prime importance in developing countries is their potential use as refrigerators for vaccines in rural areas without electricity. |
