Key  Qualifications

  • water resources development and management: special regard is given to trans-boundary water management at European level
  • project initiations in trans-boundary regions Austria/Italy, Austria/Slovenia, Austria/Hungary, SE-Europe
  • karst development and karst water resources in different karst types worldwide
  • groundwater protection: studies have been carried out regarding agricultural impact (especially nitrate, artificial lakes for recreation), industrial sites (in Austria)
  • hydrogeological engineering for hydropower plants, tunnelling and mining
  • site selection for waste disposals: several studies at national level with special regard to environmental protection assessment, investigations of waste disposals
  • deep groundwater and geothermics: studies performed in the Styrian Basin (Eastern Austria)
  • artificial groundwater recharge: experience at national level as well as abroad (Mediterranean, Middle East, South America); new challenges by European programmes

Managed aquifer recharge is considered as a key technology to meet water scarcity and to mitigate its effects. Water from the rainy period will be infiltrated artificially into the underground in order to fill up storage space there for a sustainable utilization during water scarcity periods.
