"Floopie", the flying fish - young children environmental awareness project - Project number 02/338329
Objectives:
The project intends to raise public awareness to environmental issues. The aim is to encourage young people, and indirectly the general public, to safeguard the environment by adopting an environmentally friendly behaviour. What this behaviour should be, is demonstrated by concrete examples. The project focuses on environmental problems related to water and air.
The main target groups of this project are households/families, but also the set of organisations young people deal with: youth organisations, kindergarten, environmental organisations, centres for the education concerning nature, etc.
Actions foreseen:
The project aims to adapt basic Floopie materials to the specific situation in the partner countries (including translation of the materials into 10 European languages) and to supply the partner countries with enough sets of these materials including two booklets "Floopie and the water" and "Floopie and the air"; a manual for adults/educators (accompanying both booklets), hand puppets, game "Dominoes", stickers with environmentally friendly tips, posters "water" and "air", video (with mother tape in sufficient quality to be broadcast on television).

Expected results and information material available:
Raised public environmental awareness among children, parents and educators through the production, distribution and use of the following materials:
- First of all, there are the colourful booklets "Floopie and the water" and "Floopie and the air". The booklets are meant for very young children (kindergarteners / pre-schoolers in a nursery class and pupils in the first year of primary education).
- Environmental game: "Floopie Dominoes", for children between 3 and 10. The game shows behaviour which is good for the environment, and behaviour which is bad for the environment. If the children do the right things, they win the game.
- Video with animated pictures and environment saving tips, for 3 to 10 year old children. The master tapes have broadcast quality, and can be used on television.
- Hand puppet. The adult, parent or "educator" can use this puppet with a group of children. So, the main character of the project is physically present amongst the children.
- Posters, showing Floopie in the water and in the air, surrounded by things that are good for the environment, and things that are bad for the environment.
- And finally, there are stickers with environment saving tips.
The materials will be translated, adapted to the local conditions, and made available at least in the following 10 European languages: Dutch (original), English, German, Italian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Hungarian, Greek, Danish and Slovenian. Estonia is also preparing to join the project.
Due to the multinational co-operative approach, the project will have a multiplier effect in many European countries, leading to a considerable and long-lasting further dissemination.
