This journal article discusses cleaning processes in chemical synthesis active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) manufacturing. An overview of advantages and disadvantages for both organic-based and aqueous-based solvents is also presented. The paper also expands on further issues to be considered in solvent substitution e.g. selecting the right chemistry and equipment design. It presents a case study pharmaceutical API company which applied aqueous cleaning procedures to reduce solvent use.
