Climate and air impacts

GAINS

Greenhouse Gas and Air Pollution Interactions and Synergies (GAINS) is an extension of the RAINS model. It is an analytical tool for the integrated assessment of emission control strategies for both air pollution and greenhouse gases, which covers the entire Europe up to the Ural.

In addition to the traditional air pollutants in RAINS, GAINS includes also emission control potentials and costs have been estimated for all European countries for the six greenhouse gases included in the Kyoto Protocol (CO2, CH4, N2O, HFC, PFC and SF6). This allows users to design optimal policies for meeting both air pollution and climate objective taking into account options such as fuel shift and energy saving measures.

The GAINS-Asia project commissioned by DG Research in 2005 is to implement the model for China and India by the end of 2007.
