Implementation of the Calypso Study

The study ‘Tourism exchanges in Europe: Enhancing employment, extending the seasonality spread, strengthening European citizenship and improving regional/local economies through the development of social tourism’ was finalised in July 2010 (see different reports hereunder). The Consultants (Ramboll Management Consulting (Belgium) in consortium with Détente Consultants (France), University Sapienza (Italy) and Labour Associados (Spain) regularly reported on progress to the European Commission and to stakeholders through the Calypso Meetings Facilitating Exchanges and additional meetings.

The draft final recommendations/conclusions of the 2010 study were presented during the June 10-11th 2010 Calypso Conference to be organized in Palma de Mallorca by the European Commission, in collaboration with the Spanish Presidency.

Meetings Facilitating Exchanges

The Awareness Building Meetings of 2009 werechanged to Meetings Facilitating Exchanges in 2010 to reflect a change in emphasis from awareness building to meetings seeking to identify mechanisms to facilitate attractively priced tourism exchanges between different countries in the low season. Such an objective was also at the core of the study undertaken, and was discussed in each of the four meetings scheduled in the March-June 2010 period. The first three meetings were held in Italy, Belgium and Romania (Southern, Central and Eastern Europe) whilst the Palma de Mallorca conference in June 2010 (in collaboration with the Spanish Presidency) presented the study recommendations/conclusions (see particularly the Study Executive Summary above).

The Calypso Expert Group was invited to participate in all conferences alongside other stakeholders. The European Commission's Tourism Sustainability Group was also consulted regularly.

Call for proposal

On the basis of the recommendations of the calypso Study, a call for proposals was launched (deadline 4th October 2010) to facilitate transnational low season exchanges (CFP TOU 10 711 CALYPSO).

Communication material

In view of the need to enhance the communications dimension of Calypso, the European Commission has commissioned the production of some communications material that include the creation of a logo, the production of lamas and a promotional leaflet
