Radio and telecommunications terminal equipment (R&TTE)
The sector of Radiocommunications and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Industries encompasses all products using the radio frequency spectrum (e.g. car door openers, mobile communications equipment like cellular telephones, CB radio, broadcast transmitters, etc.) and all equipment attached to public telecommunications networks (e.g. ADSL modems, telephones, telephone switches). The R&TTE is one of the few high-tech sectors where the EU is a global leader as in cellular communications.
This Directive replaced in 1999 hundreds of national approval regulations for the placing on the market and putting into service of Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment. It ensures free movement of radio equipment and terminals while guaranteeing they are safe and do not disturb radio services or other equipment, and protects from health effects of radio waves.
- It does not cover infrastructure equipment which is harmonised by Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 2004/108/EC and the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) 2006/95/EC.
- It promotes the sustainable competitiveness of the EU radio and telecommunications industries.
- It uses simplified conformity assessment methods.
- It actively contributes to increasing access to third country markets, to promoting regulatory convergence, especially with the USA, China, Japan and Russia.
- It relays research and innovation policies and other policies (e.g. trade, competition, environment, health and safety) having an impact on competitiveness.
