Radio and telecommunications terminal equipment (R&TTE)

Application of the R&TTE Directive to aeronautical equipment

As of 20 October 2005, certain types of aeronautical equipment, which used to be covered by Council Directive 93/65/EEC, fall under the R&TTE Directive 1999/5/EC. Conformity assessment for requirements that are covered by this Directive is not further done on a national basis. This will notably be the case for ground-based Air Traffic Management equipment. Unfortunately no transitional period was introduced in the legislation that repealed Directive 93/65/EEC.

Manufacturers are advised to assess the consequences of this change for their products. The change of legal regime will not affect the design of products, but conformity assessment procedures and documentation obligations will change.

A guidance document is available: ATM - Guidance on the Application of the R&TTE Directive pdf - 67 KB [67 KB] (30 June 2006).
