In May 2009 the Competitiveness Council concluded that the electrical and electronic industry as one of the key sectors to maintain a competitive and strong industrial base in Europe. The Electrical Engineering industry (EEI) is one of the biggest industries world-wide. In 2008, the overall EU sales were €411 bn out of which radio and telecommunication terminals represented €80 bn.

However, radio and terminals contribute to the EU competitiveness and profits at a higher rate than the average EEI sector does, in particular in mobile phones. Furthermore, radio and terminal equipment are an important part of the information society infrastructure which itself is an enabling force of the knowledge economy development.
