A general introduction into the concept and background of European standards produced by CEN can be found on the CEN website, a section of which is devoted to pressure equipment standards.
Harmonised Standards : are standards related to one or more "new approach" directives one of which is the PED. As a general principle the Harmonised Standards are intended to provide one means of how to meet the Essential Requirements of the respective Directive, and as a consequence give the so called presumption of conformity to the Essential Requirements.
The following types of Harmonised Standards need to be distinguished :
1. Harmonised Product Standards: describing all aspects of the respective product type(s) covered.
2. Harmonised Supporting Standards: describing certain working methods or testing methods for specific areas.
3. Harmonised Material Standards: listing and describing the properties of materials used for pressure equipment.
