Standardization: personal protective equipment

Under the European Commission's mandate, the European Standardization Organizations (CEN, CENELEC) elaborate standards which can be approved as "Harmonised Standards". These Harmonised Standards are handy tools for ensuring conformity of a PPE to the basic safety and health requirements.

Caveate: the use of "Harmonised Standards" is one way of achieving conformity; the Directive offers an alternative. The Harmonised Standards may not cover all health and safety requirements of a given PPE, they only covers those ones explicitly mentioned in the standards.
