Facts and figures
There are two broad sectors in the space industry: manufacturing (i.e. design, development and manufacturing of satellites, launchers and ground systems) and services (i.e. operation and exploitation of satellites, as well as launching services for satellites and other payloads).
- The space manufacturing sector employs over 35 000 highly qualified staff in Europe.
- The overall turnover of the European manufacturing sector is €6.1 billion in 2010.
- Today, European companies have secured around 40% of the global commercial market for satellite manufacturing and launch and satellite services.
The commercial market is highly cyclical and international competition is increasing. To ensure the continued strength of the European sector, it is thus essential that European public authorities are able to define clear policy objectives for their space activities and invest in them.
