On Monday, 4 February 2013, the European Commission Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry hosted an information seminar at European Commission Representation in Milan, Italy on the issue of late payment and the application of a new European directive to tackle the problem.
This directive is an important legal development for businesses, particularly SMEs, and public authorities in Italy and across the EU. It puts in place strict time-lines and tough penalties for payment between businesses, and between businesses and public authorities.
The seminar provided participants with an opportunity to learn more about the problem of late payment and the new measures being put in place to address the issue.
It included presentations from Mr. Antonio Tajani, Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship; Mr. Fabrizio Spada, Head of the European Commission Representation in Italy; Ms. Idaira Robayna-Alfonso, Legal Officer, Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry, European Commission; and Mr. Davide Magri, Director, Intrum Justitia Italia.
It also featured a roundtable discussion moderated by Mr. Alberto Orioli, Vice-Director, Il Sole 24 Ore and including Mr. Raffaele Baldassarre, MEP and Rapporteur for the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament; Mr. Francesco De Angelis, MEP and Rapporteur for the Industry, Research and Energy Committee of the European Parliament; Mr. Vincenzo Boccia, President, Piccola Industria, Confindustri; Mr. Paolo Buzzetti, President, ANCE; Massimiliano Alfieri, President, ANSI and Mr. Giorgio Merletti, Spokesperson, R.E TE. Imprese Italia and President, Confartigianato Imprese.
