On Tuesday, 15 January 2013, the European Commission Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry hosted an information seminar in Dublin at the European Commission Representation in Ireland on the issue of late payment and the application of a new European directive to tackle the problem.

This directive is an important legal development for businesses, particularly SMEs, and public authorities in Ireland and across the EU. It puts in place strict time-lines and tough penalties for payment between businesses, and between businesses and public authorities.

The seminar provided participants with an opportunity to learn more about the problem of late payment and the new measures being put in place to address the issue.

It included presentations from Ms. Barbara NOLAN, Head of the European Commission Representation in Ireland; Mr. Richard BRUTON TD, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation; Mr. Antti PELTOMAKI, Deputy Director-General, Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry, European Commission; Mr. John PERRY TD, Minister for Small Business and SME Envoy; Mr. Mark FIELDING, Chief Executive, Irish Small and Medium Enterprises (ISME); Ms. Patricia CALLAN, Director, Small Firms Association (SFA) and Ms. Idaira ROBAYNA-ALFONSO, Legal Officer, Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry, European Commission.
