On Wednesday, 10 October 2012, the European Commission Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry hosted an information seminar in Nicosia at the European Commission Representation in Cyprus on the issue of late payment and the application of a new European directive to tackle the problem. This seminar was the first to be held as part of a new Late Payment Information Campaign.

This directive is an important legal development for businesses, particularly SMEs, and public authorities in Cyprus and across the EU. It puts in place strict time-lines and tough penalties for payment between businesses, and between businesses and public authorities. 

The seminar provided participants with an opportunity to learn more about the problem of late payment and the new measures being put in place to address the issue.

It included presentations from Mr. Georgios MARKOPOULIOTIS, Head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus; Mr. Yannis KONTOS, Director of Industrial Development Service, Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism; Mr. Antti PELTOMAKI, Deputy Director-General, Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry, European Commission; Ms. Maria THEODOROU, Commerce and Industry Officer, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism; Ms. Idaira ROBAYNA-ALFONSO, Legal Officer, Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry, European Commission; Mr. Leonidas PASCHALIDIES, Director, Department of Education and Development, Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and Ms. Madeline BOSCH, Group Marketing Manager, Intrum Justitia AB.

This campaign is funded by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Enterprise & Industry and is part of the European Commission’s ongoing commitment to promoting economic growth and European business.
