Policy and research in security

Who we are

The EU’s Policy and Research in Security programme is run by the G-4 policy unit of Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry.

G-4 is responsible for defining the EUR 1.4 billion research programme’s technology and policy objectives from one year to the next, within the wider perspective of the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7), and organising its annual calls for research proposals. This is done in close cooperation with the Research Executive Agency (REA). The REA is also responsible for overseeing the independent evaluation of all security research proposals submitted.

Successfully selected research projects with classified information, or those with sensitive implications for security, remain within G-4’s oversight, while non-sensitive security research projects are transferred to the REA for administration.
