Combating Unfair Trade

EU trade defence instruments (anti-dumping, anti-subsidy or safeguard measures) are designed to countervail any unfair and injurious practices in international trade.

In some countries outside the EU, distortions of competition such as monopolies, state subsidies, dumping practices etc. prevail. Under such conditions, European businesses competing with exporters based in these countries can be put at a competitive disadvantage.

DG Enterprise and Industry is closely associated to trade defence proceedings carried out by the European Commission. Its overall role is to safeguard the competitiveness of European industry by restoring fair trade conditions with competitors based in third countries. Particular attention is given to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), when they have to defend themselves against unfair trade practices.
