Second RIM Plus Workshop on Bio-economy Regional Innovation Strategies (Brussels, 13 June 2013)

Second RIM Plus Workshop on Bio-economy Regional Innovation Strategies (Brussels, 13 June 2013)

Report
Report Type:

Organised by RIM Plus and the ERRIN Bioeconomy, Food and Agriculture Working Group, this was the second in a series of four RIM Plus workshops in Brussels in 2013. The event opened up the debate regarding the future opportunities and challenges for regions specialising in the bio-economy.

The bio-economy will be a key factor in future EU competitiveness and is already estimated to be worth €22 trillion and accounts for 22 million jobs in Europe. It will also play a key role in food security, managing natural resources, reducing dependence on non-renewables and will impact on mitigating climate change.

The aim of the event was to provide an outlook on the “Bio-economy Strategy for Europe” and a debate on its implementation. The workshop was timely as both the decision on the Biobased Industries PPP and the European Innovation Partnership (EIP) on Agriculture’s strategic implementation plan are expected in July.

The meeting was considered successful in terms of the thought-provoking contributions of the participants and the interesting presentations given by high level speakers from both the private and public sectors.

Main topics of discussion were:

  • How the European Commission intends to support and fund the Bio-economy during next Programming Period 2014-2020
  • Public and Private Parterships
  • EIT's Climate-KIC (Knowledge and Innovation Community) and the Bio-economy - opportunities for the Regions
  • European Innovation Partnership on Agriculture
  • Initiatives from the private sector and possible synergies
