10 July 2014 - Third public hearing - Advanced Manufacturing & Digital Technologies

Adopted in early 2014, the "For a European Industrial Renaissance” Communication pointed out the growing importance of information and communication technologies and the use of big-data in manufacturing. As a result the EC Task Force on Advanced Manufacturing also included this issue on its agenda.

The main objective of this public hearing was to gather relevant stakeholders to discuss about the challenges and new opportunities that are created by the integration of ICT into manufacturing industries and the appropriate exploitation of these new data for the development of new innovative services. Please see the agenda PDF.

140 people, including policy makers, company managers, as well as representatives of industrial associations and academia, discussed possible concrete policy measures and actions that could be launched in the coming period to leverage national and regional efforts in this area to speed up the modernisation of the European industry.

The national (Germany, the Netherlands, the UK) and regional approaches (Vanguard Initiative) to support the uptake of ICT by manufacturing industries were discussed; the industry representatives also presented their perspective. OstWestfalenLippe Cluster PDF from Germany and European Fortissimo project PDF demonstrated concrete initiatives supporting integration of ICT into manufacturing. See the minutes of the meeting PDF.

“Despite the benefits of new technologies for the manufacturing process, their adoption by industry is not a trivial task. It often implies many organisation changes within the companies, adaptation of existing management practices and an early preparation of the workforce at all levels to enable them to use such technologies in an optimal way”, underlined Daniel Calleja, Director General of DG Enterprise and Industry. “A coherent strategy and concrete actions are now needed more than ever”, he added. Khalil Rouhana PDF, Director for Components & Systems in DG Communications Networks, Content & Technology, stressed that around 1 billion euro will be dedicated to the issue of the inclusion of ICT into manufacturing under the Horizon 2020 Programme.
